The ORZEL's Path
The Polish Sub "Orzeł" was commissioned for the service with the Polish Navy on the 1st of Feb. 1939
She commenced her war service on the 2nd of Sep. '39, leaving the NB of Gdynia to take part in the Operation WOREK (Eng. Sack). Her CO was then the Cdr. Henryk Kloczkowski PN. On the 4th and 5th of Sep. she was attacked by German planes. Ten days later the ORZEL entered the harbour of Tallinn to provide for the medical treatment of her CO. The Estonian authorities postponed the sub's departure from the harbour only to intern her later under German pressure. During the night of 17th/18th Sep. the submarine, partially disarmed and commanded then by Lt. Cdr. Jan Grudzinski (the Orzel's X/O under Kloczkowski, managed to escape the harbour. On the 14th of Oct. '39, after passing Denmark or Danish Straits without proper charts, she called at the British NB of Rosyth in Scotland. During her fifth patrol, on the 8th of Apr. 1940, the ORZEL torpedoed and sank the German vessel "Rio de Janeiro". For her seventh and last patrol she left on the 23rd of May 1940 [never to return - wmw].

Das polnische Unterseeboot "Orzeł" war am 1 Februar 1939 in Dienst gestellt worden
Den Kriegsdienst begann sie am 2 September 1939, als sie den Marinestuetzpunkt Gdynia verlassen hat um am Unternehmen WOREK teilzunehmen (d. h. Sack auf Deutsch). Ihr Kommandant war damals der Korvettenkapitaen der Polnischen Marine Henryk Kloczkowski. Am 4 und 5 September '39 die ORZEL wurde von deutschen Fliegern angegriffen. Zehn Tage spaeter lief sie den damals noch neutralen Haven von Tallinn (Estland) um den kranken Kommandanten von Bord an Land zu uebergeben. Die estnischen Behoerden hatten zuerst das Auslaufen des U-Bootes verlaengert und dann internierten sie die ORZEL unter deutschem Zwang. In der Nacht vom 17/18 September verliess das (teilweise entwaffnete und von dem stellv. Kommandanten, Kptlt. Jan Grudzinski befehligte) U-Boot den Hafen auf ihrer Flucht. Am 14 Oktober '39, nach einer Passage durch die "Daenischen Strassen" ohne regelrechte Seekarten, die ORZEL meldete sich vor dem britischen Marinestuetzpunkt Rosyth in Schottland. Waehrend ihrer fuenften Einsatzfahrt aus Grossbritannien, am 8 April 1940, torpedierte die ORZEL den deutschen [Transport]Dampfer, die "Rio de Janeiro". Zu ihrer siebenten Einsatzfahrt ist die ORZEL am 23. Mai 1940 aus Rosyth ausgelaufen [und bleibt seitdem verschollen - wmw].
